Today was open day at school. This means that all the parents of the students come into the classroom and watch what a "normal day" of learning would look like. As you can imagine this would be very nerve racking for most teachers. My teacher on the other hand, handled this with ease as a veteran teacher should. She was able to keep the children engaged and in control of the entire situation. The parents really enjoyed seeing their students working and answering questions.
I for one am happy that we don't have "open days" in American schools because I found that the students were more distracted by the parents being there. Also, I feel that the students and teachers were almost putting on a show for the parents. In other words it was not natural. I completely agree with parents being involved with their child's learning and being there to help support their learning needs but at the end of the day the child's learning is most importantly between teacher and student.
